Iconic Designer Karl Lagerfeld Dead At 85

Well-renowned fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld has died at age 85.

According to The Guardian, who published the news of the German creative's passing early Tuesday morning (February 19), Chanel reportedly confirmed the fashion extraordinaire died after being admitted into an American hospital in Paris on Monday night. His cause of death is not yet known.

Additional reports from BBC News indicate Lagerfeld, who toiled until his death, had been "unwell for several weeks," causing him to miss a number of haute couture shows in Paris, creating speculation about his health.

In his lifetime, Lagerfeld was hailed as the creative force behind brands such as Chloé and Chanel as well as the Italian house, Fendi. He began his career in the 1960s as a design assistant to Pierre Balmain and eventually went on to lend his creative eye to a myriad of luxury and topline labels before launching his own eponymous brand.

In the wake of his death, fashion industry stars and celebrities alike have shared tributes in Lagerfeld's honor.

"Karl your genius touched the lives of so many, especially Gianni and I. We will never forget your incredible talent and endless inspiration. We were always learning from you," wrote Italian designer Donatella Versace along with an affection picture of her and Lagerfeld on Instagram.
